Swift is a programming language for creating iOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS apps. Swift builds on the best of C and Objective-C, without the constraints of C compatibility. Swift adopts safe programming patterns and adds modern features to make programming easier, more flexible, and more fun. Swift’s clean slate, backed by the mature and much-loved Cocoa and Cocoa Touch frameworks, is an opportunity to reimagine how software development works.

This book provides:
- A tour of the language.
- A detailed guide delving into each language feature.
- A formal reference for the language.

  • nice effort, and good book.

The new syntax seems a bit odd, but I start liking it. the REAL power is discovered if you abandon stupid consideratiion about “easy programming” and see what kind of ASM it will produce.. Far beyound poor efforts of competitors, Java and C#.
  • Well done description of Swift

    By Gianni Costanzi
I've read this book to get an idea about the new Swift language and I must say that I'm very satisfied of the quality of the publication and the code examples. The language seems very modern, it resembles a lot of constructs seen in scritp languages like Perl, but with the performance of a compiled language. I think that after this reading I'll subscribe to the iPhone Developer Program to start practicing with Swift with the new XCode and maybe one day I'll publish my first app on the App Store 😊

  • At last back to static type checking

Like an Eiffel and later C++ buff in love with Apple I felt like the man whose best friend married her loved one until past month! But finally with Swift I am back a whole one, finally eschewing those pesky errors due to silently assigning nil to a variable or a wrong typed object, and perhaps discovering it continents away when introducing the variable in an array or calling an unexisting method! As for the book I think I need to go back to Betrand Meyer's primer book on OO or the gang of four about the Design Patterns to find such a complete work with the right number of repetitions allowing to neither feel lost or bored. A big Kudo to the author and of course to Jony. I think the book could also be a good introduction to programming in general. I completed the book todY and I confirm the impression of a real progress from clumsy Objective-c.

Very good book! Would be nice a drill down on How to write patterns like, for instance, singleton and Xcode integration
